Hrothgar is the great king of the Danes. He is one of the important person in this story.

His face tells story that he has been overcome in a number of difficult, and his sage was told to children.

He had reliance and respect from people and he also had bravery. He had a great deal of compassion for his warriors and his people. And this man wasn't afraid hide his emotion. This was important that time, because according to the warrior code, a man was not to show his feelings publicly. In this story, Hrothgar represents a different kind of leadership which the youthful warrior Beowulf has. He is a father figure to Beowulf and model for the kind of king that Beowulf become.

Hrothgar is a wise and admirable kind to his people, but lacks strength to physically combat his and his people's enemies, as he is an again king. Hrothgar had a two sons, but they were too young to take his place.  He has been troubled with Grendel for years. Many of his servants were killed by Grendel, and he almost  losing his pride and courage. He had experience and dignity as a king, and he was like a invincible warrior but it was the distance past. So he was welcomed the Beowulf to kill Grendel. The reason he chosen Beowulf, because many years before, Hrothgar paid money to the Wufings to resolve a blood feud they had with Ecgtheow, Beowulf's father who died before the epic started.  Therefore, Beowulf feels some loyalty toward Hrothgar. But Hrothgar welcomed Beowulf, but is too principled to steal his throne. Hrothgar thought Beowulf was going to be an encumbrance to him. Of course, Hrothgar lacks the strength as a great warrior that would be necessary to bring true security to his people. So he found another custom that does help maintain his power, ring-giving. That mean, he knew it that Beowulf will take his throne and he afraid about it. But even though, he needs help to kill Grendel for his peace of mind. Therefore, Hrothgar generously distributes rewards, including gold, armor, rings, and horses, to the warriors who support him. As a result, he literally can buy fidelity, even when he can’t force it in battle. Hrothgar, first he worried and afraid about his  weak force , but he  found new road to   stay on the  throne, also has established a solid position as  great king. He surmounted a lot of obstacles. And last, Hrothgar wants to teach Beowulf how to handle success wisely, and he wishes to impart some of his wisdom to Beowulf.

"Holy God, out of kindness,

has sent this man to us
to save us from Grendel's terror.
I shall give treasures
to that brave man
for his impetuous courage.
Be you in haste: go,
call in this band of kinsmen.
Say to them that they are welcome to the Danish people." (Breedon 5).

"His friends and family willingly obeyed him" (Breedon 1).

"Hrothgar did what he said he would: handed out gold and trasure at huge fests" (Breedon 1).

"His face tells story that he has been overcome a lot of war and obstacles."

I think in this sentence, I used a personification for it. Why I used that element, because his appearance that I imagine was a figure of the old king . He is an old king but when he was young, he was a hero who continued win in many battles. And I want tell it, so I wrote that sentence.

"He was like a invicible warrior"

I used Simile on this sentence. He won many battles when he was young . Also compared him and now , a long time ago he was close to a invincible warrior. But in fact he was not invincible warrior . So I was using the word invincible warrior as a simile.

"he literally can buy fidelity"

In this sentence, "buy" is a keyword. "Fidelity", this is not the entity, so it does not usually buy things . Also the fidelity is trust relationship, it  have to get naturally. But the King Hrothgar got it in exchange for a reward. It is the act of buying, but it is not possible to actually buy it , so I think I was using a mataphor in this sentence .
